The Third-Place Lottery & Your Emergency Sub: The Two Things That'll Make or Break Your Bracket
Two rules in this game cause more head-scratching, swearing, and last-minute rethinks than anything else. Master them and you'll be sipping from the trophy. Ignore them and, well… Roy Meane will have words.
The Best Third-Placed Teams (a.k.a. "wait, third place qualifies?!")
Welcome to the 48-team World Cup. Here's the maths:
- 12 groups of 4.
- Top 2 from each group go through automatically — that's 24 teams.
- Then the 8 best third-placed teams sneak in too.
- 24 + 8 = 32 teams in the knockout stage, which now kicks off with a brand-new Round of 32.
So finishing third in your group is no longer a flight home — for 8 lucky sides it's a golden ticket to the knockouts.
What this means for your predictions: on the groups screen, every group has a 1st / 2nd / 3rd selector — and a little "3rd place qualifies" checkbox. You get to tick 8 of them. These are your gambles on which third-placed teams survive the cull.
The scoring upside: a correctly-predicted qualifying third-placed team scores exactly the same as nailing a group winner — +1 for qualifying, +1 more for the exact position. Free points hiding in plain sight.
Our advice:
- Target the strong groups. A third-placed team from a brutal group (looking at you, Group H — Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia) is far likelier to be one of the 8 than a third-placed team from a soft group.
- Don't just tick your 8 favourite countries — tick the 8 groups whose third-placed side you fancy to be among the best also-rans.
- Spread your risk. Eight is a lot. Going all-in on the glamour groups and ignoring the rest is how you finish mid-table.
The Emergency Sub (use it like it's your last lifeline — because it is)
You get one Emergency Sub for the entire tournament. One. Use it well.
What it does: if one of your knockout picks gets dumped out, the Emergency Sub lets you swap your eliminated team for the team that actually beat them — and that new team is then carried forward through the rest of your bracket automatically. It's a retroactive "okay, fine, you were right" button.
When you can use it: only between rounds — specifically when a knockout round is completely finished and the next round hasn't started yet. Miss the window and it's gone for that round.
The catch (there's always a catch): the swapped match takes a 6-point penalty. Yes, even though your new pick is "correct" by definition. You're not paying for being right about that game — you're paying to rescue your bracket so the right team marches on into the rounds that really count.
Why it can still be brilliant: knockout points double every round —
- Round of 32 — 1 point per correct pick
- Round of 16 — 2 points
- Quarter-final — 4 points
- Semi-final — 8 points
- Final — 16 points
So eating 6 points to put the actual winner into your quarters, semis and final can be a massive net gain. Get it right and you might also bag the Golden Touch badge (awarded if your Emergency Sub team wins its very next game).
Our advice:
- Hoard it. Don't blow it in the Round of 32 to save a single point. Save it for when a big-name pick — your tournament winner, ideally — gets knocked out early and you need them resurrected for the high-value rounds.
- Do the maths. Minus 6 is worth it if the rescued team is heading into the QF, SF or Final (4, 8, 16 points a pop). It is not worth it to fix a dead Round-of-32 branch.
- Watch the window. It only opens between rounds. Set a reminder, because it slams shut the moment the next round kicks off.
